The Friends of the Richmond Hills is a group of local residents who banded together in 2015 to create the Richmond Hills Initiative. The Initiative’s purpose is to permanently protect the Richmond Hills above the El Sobrante Valley from environmentally harmful, unwise development.

The group is descended from the older Canyon Park Friends of Open Space (CPFOS), which was formed in 2002 to defend the hills from the Clark Road project and, later, the Forest Green proposal. CPFOS itself is in turn descended from a long chain of informal groups of community members which have fought off proposed development of the area in the past, dating all the way back to the 1970’s.

We are affiliated with the Sierra Club Foundation under the umbrella of the Club’s San Francisco Bay Chapter, which has provided support and a financial home for us.
